Czech Digital Nomad Visa 2026: IT/Marketing Track & Živno Path

12 min read · Last checked July 2026

The Czech Republic runs a formal Digital Nomad Programme (via CzechInvest / Interior Ministry channels) aimed at IT and marketing specialists from a short list of partner countries. Income is pegged to 1.5× the Czech average salary — about CZK 69,836/month in 2026 figures (~€2,800 / ~$3,200). If you are not on that nationality/profession list, many freelancers still pursue a long-term stay via a trade licence (Živnostenské oprávnění, "Živno") plus the matching long-term visa/residence — a different, more DIY path with its own interview and fund checks.

    DN programme focus
IT specialists & marketing specialists only
    Eligible nationalities (DN)
Limited list (e.g. US, UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Israel, Mexico, Brazil, NZ — verify current set)
    Income (DN track)
    ~CZK 69,836/month (1.5× average wage; updates yearly)
    Bank buffer (typical)
On the order of ~CZK 150k–160k+ liquid for application (confirm current)
    Insurance
Health cover often cited at €60,000+ medical minimum
    Alt path
Živno (trade licence) + long-term business/other purpose visa
    Best base
Prague (Vinohrady, Žižkov, Karlín for nomad density)

The Digital Nomad Programme is not open to every passport or every remote job. If your nationality or profession is outside the published list, do not force the DN label — evaluate Živno or another residence purpose instead.

Path A — Digital Nomad Programme (IT / Marketing)

    • Hold a passport from an eligible country on the current CzechInvest programme list
    • Work remotely in qualifying IT or marketing roles — either employed by a foreign company or freelancing/own company managed outside Czechia
    • Meet the 1.5× average salary income threshold (CZK figure adjusts annually)
    • Show accommodation, insurance, and clean documentation for a long-term visa/residence application
    • Employee track: remain employed abroad and work via telecoms from Czech territory ("purpose of other" style long-term visa framing)
    • Freelancer track under the programme: combine with appropriate Czech self-employment permissions when required

Path B — Živno Trade Licence Route

The classic freelancer path: obtain a Czech trade licence (Živno), prove funds and accommodation, pass the consular interview, and enter on a long-term visa for business/self-employment purposes. It is more flexible on profession than the DN programme but involves real Czech bureaucracy — trade office registration, health insurance setup, and tax registration after arrival.

    • Business plan / activity description officers can understand
    • Proof of funds (commonly several thousand euros equivalent in liquid savings)
    • Accommodation evidence covering the long-stay intent
    • Interview readiness: expect questions about your services, clients, and why Prague

    Required Documents (Core Set)

    • Valid passport and application forms for long-term visa/residence
    • Proof of income meeting the relevant threshold (contracts, payslips, invoices, tax docs)
    • Bank statements showing the required balance and income pattern
    • Comprehensive health insurance meeting Czech minimums
    • Proof of accommodation in the Czech Republic
    • Criminal record extract with apostille/legalization as required
    • For IT/marketing DN: evidence of role/qualifications (degree or multi-year experience)
    • For Živno: trade-licence paperwork or reservation of trade activity

How to Apply — Practical Sequence

    1. Confirm whether you fit the DN nationality + IT/marketing box or should plan Živno.
    2. Calculate the current 1.5× average wage figure — do not rely on last year's blog posts.
    3. Gather apostilled criminal records and translations early (slowest step for many applicants).
    4. Lock accommodation evidence that matches the consulate's standards.
    5. Submit at the Czech embassy/consulate with jurisdiction over your residence.
    6. After entry: complete any residence-card biometrics, trade/tax registrations, and address reporting on time.

    Tax Snapshot

Czech personal income tax is often described as a flat 15% for standard brackets, with solidarity/higher bands for high earners. Tax residency typically follows physical presence and center-of-life tests. Freelancers on Živno face advance payments and proper invoicing. Treat "I only invoice foreign clients" as a question for a Czech tax advisor, not a DIY assumption.

    Common Mistakes

    • Applying under the DN programme with a non-eligible nationality or non-IT/marketing role
    • Using outdated income thresholds from older articles
    • Underestimating apostille and translation lead times
    • Booking tourist-center housing only and struggling with registration formalities
    • Confusing Schengen visa-free tourism with long-term remote work permission

Programme eligibility lists and CZK thresholds change — this guide reflects research as of July 2026. Confirm with CzechInvest and the competent Czech mission before applying.
